Canyon Lake DUI checkpoint nets arrests, citations

A DUI and driver’s license checkpoint conducted by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department/Lake Elsinore Station on Friday night resulted in multiple arrests and citations. Located at Railroad Canyon Road and Sorrel Lane, the checkpoint operated from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. and screened a total of 1,008 vehicles.

The operation led to two arrests for driving under the influence, 22 citations issued to unlicensed or suspended drivers, and the towing of 10 vehicles. Additionally, one misdemeanor arrest warrant was served, and a vehicle pursuit culminated in an arrest. The checkpoint’s primary goal was to enhance public safety by deterring impaired driving.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that the checkpoint’s location was selected due to a history of DUI-related incidents in the area. Checkpoints serve not only to apprehend offenders, but to discourage individuals from driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Funding for the checkpoint came from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The grant supports efforts to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol and drug-impaired crashes in the community.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public of the dangers of impaired driving, including the use of alcohol, prescription medication, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana. Impaired drivers not only risk their safety, but that of others, facing significant financial penalties and license suspension, Reporting Sergeant Brad Foster said.

Community members are urged to report suspected drunk drivers by calling 9-1-1, he said. The initiative aims to ensure Canyon Lake’s roads are safer for everyone, demonstrating the department’s ongoing commitment to road safety and the well-being of the community.
