Thunderbirds concert a big hit at the Lodge

Canyon Lake POA’s “Concerts at the Lodge” series put on its 34th show since the series began on Saturday night and had 260 in attendance at the Holiday Bay Room. The Fabulous Thunderbirds were terrific as was opening act Makayla Phillips.

The headliners The Fabulous Thunderbirds gave a dynamic, energetic and bluesy performance. Kim Wilson, the band’s founding member, is its harmonica player and lead vocalist. Bob Welsh played the piano and guitar, Ruby Albin the drums, Johnny Moler the guitar and Steve Kirsty the Bass.

The artists were exactly that, on every level they each played with intense passion as they kept the audience engaged and clapping their hands throughout each song.

The group has recorded 26 albums and nine music videos. Many at Saturday’s Concert seemed to be at the show just to experience their music once again. The band has toured with dozens of major acts including the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton.

“Kim talked about his relationships over the years with Bobby “Blue” Bland, BB King, Otis Rush, Jimmy Rodgers, and Muddy Waters,” Doug Schultz, producer of Concerts at the Lodge, said. “They did not disappoint.”

Makayla took the stage first and came out in a sexy outfit, sat down and performed some of her songs that are not yet released. Accompanied by her guitarist, Luke Nolan, she gave a beautiful live acoustic performance that the audience enjoyed.

The talented artist has an incredible range, hitting notes that seemed like an angel took over her body as she did vocal runs that wowed the audience.

Most of the songs performed were none the audience knew, but she and Luke captivated the audience nonetheless.

It is easy to see how Makayla was an American Idol finalist, America’s Got Talent Golden Buzzer Winner, and is currently performing in live performances throughout the area. Her sweet and sultry disposition leaves you loving her all the more.
