Community Gardeners need help

Join members of the Canyon Lake Community Garden tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. to start the building of raised beds for the new Canyon Lake  Community Garden.

There were 17 people who showed Saturday to work in the garden removing all the weeds. Now, raised beds are ready to be built and filled.

“Alex Cook and Bill Van Vleet and his wife were among the 17 who came and weeded,” Kelly Lopez, president of the Canyon Lake Community Gardeners, said. “We successfully removed all the weeds in the area in a few hours.”

Hoping for another great turnout, Kelly said tomorrow’s focus will be to finish building the raised bed and filling the beds by “lasagna composting.” The beds will be built, then the bottom of the beds are lined with cardboard, then a layer of organic waste, continuing to layer with green and brown waste.

“It will break down over the winter and become rich soil for planting in spring,” Kelly said. “There will be 20 beds total. Show up tomorrow, bring some of your gardening supplies and join the group.”
