Multi-club blood drive set for Monday at Country Club

A blood drive hosted by the Canyon Lake Women’s Golf Club, the Canyon Lake 9ers Golf Club and the Canyon Lake Ski Club will take place Monday at the Canyon Lake Golf & Country Club.

Canyon Lake residents are being asked to participate in the American Red Cross blood drive by making an appointment online at www.redcrossblood.org and noting sponsor code CLGCC. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive and are required to wear a face covering or mask while at the drive, in alignment with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention public guidance.

The blood drive will take place in the Magnolia Room from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

“We are committed to strengthening our community and helping meet hospital and patient needs through blood donations,” Travis Montgomery, one of the drive organizers, said. “This blood drive is our way of giving our neighbors and friends the opportunity to help save lives.”

Blood is a perishable product that can only come from volunteer blood donors. With someone in the United States needing blood every two seconds, blood products must be constantly replenished, according to the Red Cross.

“We urge community members to donate blood and help ensure that patients in local hospitals have a supply of blood ready and waiting before an emergency occurs,” Travis said. “There’s no better feeling than knowing that your blood donation may give someone a second chance at life.”

According to the Red Cross, donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative.

Additionally, the Red Cross is testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The results as to whether a donor has the antibodies are available online after the drive. The Red Cross said testing will provide critical insight into whether donors may have possibly been exposed to this coronavirus, as some COVID-19 carriers can be asymptomatic.

Director volunteers needed at Chamber

The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce is looking for new leadership and is asking its members to step up and volunteer for several board positions, including its vice president.

Kristina Rasband, who was recently hired as the chamber’s new marketing and communications director, is out recruiting new board members to fill six vacant director positions including vice president.

The five directors the chamber is looking to recruit are Director of Volunteers, Director of Sponsorship and Donations, Director of Membership, Director of Member Events and Director of Community Events.

Those who are interested should submit a cover letter to the chamber at CanyonLakeChamber@outlook.com and follow the chamber on Instagram and Facebook, Kristina said.

Rock the Boat concert next weekend

A country-music-themed Rock the Boat Concert will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17 and will feature well-traveled local country artists The Kanan Road Band and keyboardist Harlan Spector.

The Holiday Harbor stage will be turned toward the water and away from an empty amphitheater there. The audience will be entirely in the water. There is no charge for attending.

The event will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with concert goers enjoying the event on their boats, kayaks or other vessels. At 5:00 p.m., the main lake will slow down to 5 mph. The amphitheater and surrounding area will be closed for access and use.

Riverside County Sheriff and Community Patrol will be in place to enforce access control in the closed areas. Residents must continue to practice all physical distancing and face-covering guidelines that are in place.

The Kanan Road Band is a popular local band made up of a trio of brothers and their two friends. They play their own sound, something they call “California Country,” which is a mix of classic and modern country, Doug said. Kanan Road consistently delivers unforgettable, contagious high-energy and in-your-face live performances filled with heartfelt precision.

The opening act will be Harlan Spector, a Los Angeles-based keyboard player best known as a Hammond organist with extraordinary ability on the organ bass pedals. He plays all styles of music including rock, blues, funk, soul, country, jazz and classical.

Harlan began playing the keyboard professionally at 13 and did a national tour at 17 years of age. After earning a BA in Music at Illinois State University, he began touring all over most of the country. The touring took place in a wide variety of venues and led to increased popularity.

This event series is the brainstormed COVID-19 rendition of the ‘’Concerts at the Lodge’’ organized by Doug Schultz and the Canyon Lake POA.

“We decided to start one hour sooner since the days are getting shorter and the temperature is getting cooler,” Doug said. “This concert will feature the same quality sound and lights as the previous show with the addition of moving lights on stage to enhance the production value of the show.”

Grief support group starts Monday

A support group for those who have lost loved ones will begin Monday at the Canyon Lake Community Church and is open to the general public.

The 13-week class will be led by the church’s Pastor Peter VanDyke in which he reaches out to help those who have lost someone as recent as a few months ago or as long ago as years since the actual loss.

In this class, Pastor Pete said he will provide a safe place where grieving family members and friends can find tools to help them deal with the stress which accompanies the death of a loved one.

“Stress has been identified as America’s number one health problem and causes a person to experience many negative issues,” Pastor Pete said. “A person’s physical and mental health is greatly affected by the stress that one may be enduring at that time. One of the greatest stress factors in life is the death of a loved one.”

For the past eight years, Canyon Lake Community Church has provided GriefShare, which is a friendly and caring group of people who will walk alongside others through one of life’s most difficult experiences.

During the many sessions that have been held by Pastor Pete over the years, many of the participants relate how being involved in these sessions has helped them to face life once again with hope and a positive attitude, he said.

At each session, the GriefShare group watches a video seminar featuring top experts on grief and recovery subjects. After viewing the video, group members spend time as a support group and discuss what was presented in that week’s video seminar and how it can be lived out in their own lives. During the week, participants have the opportunity to use their workbook for further personal study of the grieving process and to help sort out their emotions through journaling.

In the classes, several topics will be addressed such as why one’s grief experience is harder than they may have imagined. Helpful goals to set on the journey of grief will be discussed. The issue of dealing with those who try to rush one through one’s grief will be discussed along with why the path to healing from grief isn’t always smooth. How to get things done when one does not have the energy is always a popular topic.

Classes are held on 13 consecutive Mondays beginning Monday. Duplicate classes are held at 10:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. which allows participants flexibly in scheduling each week. The classes are held in Building A (chapel) at the church, which is located on the first parking lot near the entrance to the campus.

For those interested in attending the class, Pastor Pete can be contacted by leaving a message on his office phone, 951-244-1877 ext. 204, or by simply showing up at a meeting.

Participants can be anybody with a desire to attend and do not need to be an attender of Canyon Lake Community Church. Class members do not need to attend all 13 sessions as each session is “self-contained.” They will find encouragement and help whenever they begin, Pastor Pete said.

Face masks will be required and social distancing will be practiced.
