City Council candidates submit official statements

As part of the election packet sent to each voter, the five candidates for the three vacancies on the Canyon Lake City Council submitted their official statements. Those statements are printed below.

Three vacancies will be filled in the Nov. 3 election from the field of five candidates. Two of the five men who filed for inclusion in the election are incumbents. Current Council Member Randy Bonner is not running for re-election.

Current Mayor Jordan Ehrenkranz and Council Member Larry Greene are on the ballot for new terms on the council. Paul Kakis, Dale Welty and Jim Randle fill out the field.

The election will be part of the General Election on Nov. 3. The three candidates with the most votes will serve on the city council for a term of four years. There are five members of the city council. Mayor Pro-tem Casey Castillo and Council Member Jeremy Smith are the two members of the city council whose terms expire in two years.

Education and Qualifications:

Canyon Lake is a special place to call home. Like you, I’m passionate about the direction of our community. As your Mayor, I’ve worked tirelessly to balance our budget, strengthen public safety, advocate for our businesses and make Canyon Lake an even better place to live.

It’s been an honor to serve as your Mayor and City Councilman. I’ve used my experience as a business owner and former Board President to get things done. I made a commitment to re-open Fire Station 60 and by working together with my colleagues on the City Council we have successfully done that.

My top priority is helping Canyon Lake recover from the devastating impacts of COVID-19. We need to ensure government provides resources for those that were impacted by the pandemic.

If elected, I will continue to be a strong voice for our residents.

My priorities for Canyon Lake are:

  • Help Canyon Lake recover from the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Continue to strengthen public safety to keep us safe
  • Maintain our balanced budget
  • Increase transparency and accountability
  • Work to provide a better quality of life for residents

Occupation: Retired Fire Professional

Education and Qualifications:

My education includes a B.A. degree in management from the University of Redlands, attended CSULB MPA program, Santa Ana College Fire and Health SCI, Monterey College Fire Command and Administration, graduate executive officer in training NFA and professional certification and awards.

As a current city council member, I have developed a keen awareness of the requirements to be an effective council member. Those include problem solving and the ability to provide viable solutions to complex and challenging issues as well as being a team player, skillful in establishing positive working relationships with other council members, community groups, residents and business representatives. I have a strong emergency service background and have negotiated JPA agreements, County cooperatives and auto aid contracts.

My vision for Canyon Lake is to keep our citizens safe, provide essential services and foster and develop an atmosphere that promotes a sense of pride and ownership in our community.

Education and Qualifications:

I, Paul Kakis, am running for the office of City Council. I bought my first home in Canyon Lake in 1995 and have been a resident ever since. My wife Pamela and I have raised a family here and now we are ushering in a new grandbaby. As a parent and grandparent, we are committed to health and safety of community. As a Healthcare Professional, I know the seriousness of our current situation and importance of working as a team and the need to make decisions timely. I want to bring that sensibility to city government. I am for economic development and sustainable city growth now and in the future.

Many of you know me from my contributions to helping kids in our community by organizing the Lambs Fellowship Annual Car Show and Trunk or Treat events. Over the last several years, working with local business and community leaders, we developed venues that provide help and support to many others. I believe that good coaching and mentoring begins at home, and it is incumbent on all of us to be good citizens.

Education and Qualifications:

Canyon Lake has been home to our family for over 32 years. Just like you, I’m passionate about our community and dedicated to making Canyon Lake a little piece of paradise.

Once we decided to make Canyon Lake our home, my wife and I became dedicated to public services. Serving as Treasurer and President for our Board of Directors has given me the experience of balancing a budget and making public safety a priority.

Furthermore, I have spent countless hours working on the Recreation Committee, Youth Action Committee, Facilities Planning Committee and Finance Committee. In my career, I have managed over 50 professionals and have made tough decisions for the betterment of the people I serve.

Making the decision to run for City Council was a family decision. My wife is currently serving on the Santa Rosa Academy Board of Directors and has been part of the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce, the Dog Park and Recreation Committee. Together we want to serve you, the people of Canyon Lake, as a strong voice on the council.

As part of the Canyon Lake City Council, my goals are clear:

  • Support our business community
  • Make public safety a priority
  • Secure our budget

Occupation: Small Business Owner

Education and Qualifications:

Dear Neighbor, My name is James Randle. I have been a resident of Canyon Lake for 20 years. I am running for Canyon Lake City Council to help and preserve our 4.6 square miles of paradise.

With your vote, we can bring meaningful improvements to our community. As a small business owner, I bring over 40 years of practical private sector experience.

The City of Canyon Lake has a major revenue problem. Canyon Lake needs strong leadership and rational at the forefront to bring about positive change.

As past President (2015-2017) of our local Chamber of Commerce, I worked hard in attracting new business to Canyon Lake.

As your Council member I will:

  • Promote Law and Order by bolstering our public safety services
  • Spur economic growth and increase revenues
  • Maintain a balanced budget and maintain our reserve fund
  • Increase transparency, accountability and community engagement
