City providing free cloth face masks to all who need them

County-mandated cloth face masks are being provided to residents of Canyon Lake after the city partnered with a group of community volunteers to sew them. The city is providing the materials and these volunteers are creating them.

City manager Chris Mann said the masks will begin to be delivered this week to those who do not already have one.

To obtain a mask for everybody in the household, email the city at media@cityofcanyonlake.com. In the email give a name and phone number and state how many masks are needed (one per each member of the household) and the address to where they need to be delivered.

Volunteers will be delivering the masks (made of new sanitary cotton material) in sealed plastic bags to the doorsteps of those who have requested them.

Face coverings are required whenever anybody leaves their homes for essential trips. The county has the authority to levy a $1,000 fine for not wearing such a mask.

The city is still looking for more volunteers to help with the effort. Those who are able to sew and assemble these masks are needed, but volunteers are also needed to deliver the masks to the front porches of the various recipients around Canyon Lake.

The confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Canyon Lake have remained relatively steady compared to the surrounding cities and the rest of the county. As of The Friday Flyer print deadline, there were six reported cases in the city.

“We feel confident that the measures we have taken are working,” Chris said. “However, with nicer weather on the horizon, we want to encourage residents to continue doing a great job of staying home and practicing social distancing. Enforcement Department staff will be on patrol in the community and on the lake to remind people of the regulations we are all still under.”
