Final Friday Flyer in mailbox next week

After more than 1,700 straight weeks without missing a single Friday, Canyon Lake mailboxes are about to feel a little lonely. Next week will be the last time a Friday Flyer newspaper will be delivered. The office in the Canyon Lake Town Center will close the end of this month, the staff will disperse and the end of a 33-year-long era will end.

“We are in mourning,” Friday Flyer Publisher Chuck Golding said. “But, I could no longer financially sustain the increased costs of publishing the newspaper. I love this community and these loyal employees. We are family. What a heartwrenching decision it has been to break this apart.”

The newspaper is primarily financed by its advertisements. The lion‘s share of those advertisements over the years has come from the real estate market, which in Canyon Lake has always been healthy.

“When the real estate market slumps, so do we,” Chuck said. “It‘s been slumping for awhile. Combine that with both increased costs and a general slow down in the print media world and the writing was on the wall for us. But, we have hung in their longer than almost all other community newspapers in the county. Look around. We‘re the last one standing. Canyon Lake has been very, very good to us.”

The Friday Flyer is an adjudicated newspaper and qualifies to publish public notices such as fictitious business name statements, city public notices, trustee sales and other public notices. Chuck said he will continue to print a miniature 8.5×11 “Friday Flyer” that will contain a page or two of Canyon Lake POA event notes and a few pages of these public notices. This little Friday Flyer handout will be available just inside the door at the Canyon Lake POA office.

Also, Golding Publications printing services will also continue at full strength and will operate remotely, Chuck said.

“All of the printing we do will continue,” Chuck said. “We will take orders via email and deliver the printing to our customers like we do now.”

All of The Friday Flyer office furniture, supplies, picture frames, chairs, etc. is being given away tomorrow at the office. See the ad in today‘s newspaper.

More detail about the closure will be included in next week‘s final Friday Flyer.
