Family Matters Club revives Etiquette Class for Children

The Canyon Lake Family Matters Club is reintroducing its once-opular etiquette class for children aged 5 to 18 and is scheduling it from April 29 to May 3. The weeklong program, aimed at instilling good manners and social skills, will take place at the Eastport Building, with sessions starting at 6:00 p.m. each evening.

The cost of participation is $25 for the first child, with a reduced fee of $20 for each sibling. The club offers limited scholarships for families in need of financial assistance.

To cater to varying age groups and family preferences, the club plans to divide participants accordingly, while also accommodating requests to keep siblings together. While children are encouraged to dress appropriately for the occasion, the final night will be a special occasion featuring a graduation and celebration, where formal attire is encouraged.

The club’s Shawna Bowen spoke of the effectiveness of the learning environment.

“We have found that children learn best when their parents aren’t present,” she said. “So we are asking that parents drop off your child, sign them in and then come back and pick them up.”

The culmination of the course on graduation evening will allow parents to witness the new skills their children have acquired.

“The kids love to show off all the things they learned,” Club President Jeannie Hoonnirun said.

The etiquette class is structured to mix fun with educational content, ensuring that participants enjoy themselves while learning. The course outline includes an initial 15-minute period for sign-in and grouping, followed by a structured 15-minute session focusing on “Magic Words,” greetings, and making a positive impression.

Daily reviews and new lessons will build on the children’s skills throughout the week. The final day will feature a review of the week’s lessons, special events, a graduation ceremony, and a celebration, showcasing the children’s newly acquired etiquette in front of their parents.

Additionally, in partnership with the Mermaids of Canyon Lake, participants will be offered a discounted ticket to the club’s June tea fundraiser.
