Shenanigans and lots of green make up 9ers tourney

The Canyon Lake 9ers Women’s Golf Club celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in style with its annual Shenanigans Tournament, drawing an impressive turnout of 68 participants, most dressed with creative and very green outfits.

Despite challenging weather conditions on the morning of the event, the spirit of the participants remained undamped, with golfers donning vibrant emerald green attire and festive decorations adorning the golf course.

First place went to Helen Buckley-Sullivan and her shamrocked sons, from left, Mike Buckley, Steve Buckley and Dan “Buck” Buckley. Helen, 91, has lived in Canyon Lake for over 30 years and started playing with the 9ers Golf Club when she was a spry 60. Her sons have made this tournament every year for the past five years. The tournament featured a variety of unique playing formats across different holes, including scrambles and holes where only a driver or a 7 iron could be used.

One of the day’s highlights was Ellie Weidner’s remarkable play on hole #7, where she skillfully used her driver to escape a bunker and then putted the ball into the hole.

The winning team comprised 91-year-old Helen Buckley-Sullivan and her sons Mike, Steve, and Dan “Buck” Buckley. Douglas Uhler, Joanna Uhler, Alice Giambra, and John Giambra secured second place, while third place was claimed by Lynette Miller, Jen Turpin, Karla Cook, and Linda Erler.

Following the tournament, participants were treated to a traditional Irish lunch at the Canyon Lake Country Club, featuring corned beef, carrots, cabbage, potatoes, and a side of green beer, accompanied by themed cupcakes.

The delightful meal and the friendly service of the Country Club staff were the perfect end to a memorable day of golf and St. Patrick’s Day festivities.
