1969 Dodge Superbee chosen CL Car Club Car of the Month

Despite the cold weather, the first Canyon Lake Car Club Cars, Coffee and Donuts of 2024 had people of all ages coming to one of the club’s best-attended meetings Saturday. Many who came brought their classic cars, but others were there to simply enjoy the cars on display and to see what the event at Sierra Park was all about.

Car of the Month was won by Jill Mathison and Bob McGeachy for their 1969 Dodge Superbee. The two moved to Canyon Lake in September 2020 and joined the Car Club the following year.

The Superbee was one of only 826 Superbees built. Their Superbee has the original 440 6 Pack, A12 package with the lift off hood.

“It was originally a 4 speed, but was switched to an automatic before I bought it,” Bob said. “I purchased the car in 1978 while I was in high school. I am its fourth owner.”

He restored the car in 2017-2018, which included repainting it back to its original colors. Also restored were a black lift off hood, an engine and drivetrain overhaul, a new interior, brakes, wheels and tires.

Also at the event was club member Graham Lees. He attended his first Cars, Coffee and Donuts at Sierra Park in August when he brought his 1961 Triumph TR3A to put on display.

“Doug Ray, a friend of ours invited us to the meet up, and I got the car ready the night before by 7:00 p.m.,” Graham said. “I had one very similar to this in my teens back in England. So I guess I am revisiting my youth.”

Since then, Graham purchased another car with his wife Brenda, as the car club has become a fun part of their lives in Canyon Lake. The new purchase is a 1962 Jaguar MK II, in British Racing Green. Graham and his wife are very excited about being a part of the club and have seen much growth in just the few months they have been members.

“We’ve enjoyed going to the meetings,” Graham said. “It’s good because they tend to have interesting topics. When I took part in the car show here I encountered very nice and very warm people. That was the first car show here with my Triumph. I have met a lot of very interesting people, and seen a lot of interesting cars.”

The Canyon Lake Car Club has its Cars, Coffee and Donuts event every second Saturday of the month at Sierra Park from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
