Maui Sunday fun, raises $1000s

The aloha spirit was embraced at the Canyon Lake POA’s annual Maui Sunday.

The community had the opportunity to discover the magic of the day—a cherished tradition that has been infused with Hawaiian flair for years. Beyond Sunday’s festivities, this particular year held a greater purpose. In response to Maui’s wildfire crisis, the community stood together to aid affected families through the Hawaii Community Foundation, an organization with a strong local presence that provided displaced families with food, clothing and shelter.

Additionally, at the event, attendees were encouraged to stop by the Maui Wildfire Relief Booth below the stairs at the Canyon Lake Lodge, where the event was held, to learn more about other ways to assist in the relief efforts. The community had come together to make a difference. It is estimated that thousands were raised at the Maui Relief table.

“Thanks to the generosity of our residents, we raised thousands of dollars with the strong support of the city, the POA and Canyon Lake Yacht Club,” Canyon Lake POA Board President Bill Van Vleet said.

The event was a day of play for all ages with inflatable water slides, a bounce house, cornhole and a Hula Hoop Contest. Children drew pictures to send to Maui children at an arts and crafts table sponsored by the Canyon Lake Family Matters Club.

The Yacht Club also provided kids at the event with opportunities to color pages of Hawaiian scenes and sign their name and age. These colored pages will be delivered to kids on Maui to tell them that kids they never met, kids that live on the Mainland, are sending love to them during this terrible time. For almost three hours, the two “Kids2Kids” coloring tables were filled with children of all ages coloring pages to be sent to kids on Maui, Yacht Club Commodore Ron Wilbur said.

The Yacht Club’s booth was set up to raise funds for the Maui Relief effort. It donated 100% of dues from new members to the fund. At Maui Sunday, 17 new members joined the Yacht Club. These dues and other contributions received Sunday totaled $1,000. An additional $2,000 was donated via the club’s QR code that was distributed on its flyers at the event.

A DJ hosted the day’s events and music was played throughout the day. The Lighthouse Restaurant had a spectacular Hawaiian-themed menu in addition to popular food trucks in the parking lot.

The evening ended with luau-style Polynesian Dancers on Sunset Beach. With the sun setting and the lake as the backdrop, Sunset Beach seemed to be transformed into the gorgeous Hawaii Islands.
