42-year-old cyclist killed on Railroad Canyon Road

A 42-year-old Lake Elsinore man, apparently riding his bicycle on the wrong side of Railroad Canyon Road, was struck by a vehicle, ejected from his bicycle and died at the scene of the accident Saturday night about 1,000 feet west of Canyon Lake Drive South near the Main Gate.

Kennan Ruiz was riding his bike into oncoming traffic on eastbound Railroad Canyon Road at approximately 9:49 p.m. and rode into the path of an oncoming vehicle, according to the preliminary investigation, Riverside County Sheriff Public Information Officer Sergeant Wenndy Brito-Gonzalez said. The bicyclist was ejected from his bicycle and pronounced deceased at the scene by Cal Fire at 10:00 p.m.

Deputies, Cal Fire and the Canyon Lake Fire Department arrived within minutes and located a vehicle that had collided with a bicyclist. The unidentified driver of the vehicle from Porterville CA was not injured in the collision. The driver of the vehicle immediately called 911 to report the incident and police said he was cooperative with law enforcement.

No additional details are being released at this time as the investigation is still ongoing.
