POA incumbent ousted by six votes

Joe Kamashian

Joe Kamashian won the third seat in the annual Canyon Lake Property Owners Association by obtaining 694 votes, only six votes more than incumbent Renee Griffiths’ 688 votes. Jeff Bill and Alex Cook join Joe as elected members of the Canyon Lake POA Board of Directors.

Alex was the leading vote getter with 755 votes and Jeff received 727 votes. Just 30 votes behind Joe was Chris Papavero with 664 votes and 44 votes behind was Jeanne O’Dell with 650 votes.

The association’s annual meeting was postponed until Saturday because not enough votes were cast to constitute a quorum on Thursday. When the annual meeting was called to order, the total votes were 44 short of meeting a quorum. There were 1,556 ballots received, and 1,600 were needed to meet quorum. So, the meeting reconvened on Saturday with a lower threshold and the meeting was called to order and the new board installed.

With the board constituted for another year, the new board voted among themselves on new positions. The Board of Director Officers for 2023/24 are President Bill Van Vleet, Vice President Greg Doherty, Secretary Joe Kamashian, Treasurer Alex Cook and Director Jeff Bill.

The adjourned meeting requires only that 25% of the total 4,800 members needed to vote to achieve a quorum. This requirement was easily met with 1,583 ballots received prior to the adjourned meeting’s deadline. There were 27 additional votes that came in after the original meeting was attempted to be held on the Thursday prior.

Also on the ballot was a measure asking Canyon Lake POA members to vote as to whether excess POA income should be applied to the following year’s assessment. The IRS allows such inadvertent excess member income, when applied to the following fiscal year, to avoid tax consequence. The voters approved the measure in overwhelming numbers. 1,313 voted in favor and 74 against.

To ensure a fair and transparent election process, the Association enlisted the services of HOA Elections of California, Inc. as the Inspector of Elections. The role of HOA Elections was crucial in this process. They registered all received ballots and carefully examined each one to determine their authenticity, validity, and overall impact. Additionally, they addressed any challenges or questions raised regarding the voting rights of individuals.

Once all the necessary steps were completed, HOA Elections tabulated the votes and certified the results of the election. All three elected candidates were properly placed and accepted nomination.
