Aprile McKinnon named Citizen of Month

Aprile DeAnne McKinnon is more than a busy reporter for The Friday Flyer. Her volunteerism and involvement in the community were the accomplishments pointed out last week at the City of Canyon Lake City Council Meeting as she was awarded the city’s May Citizen of the Month.

Aprile has been in Canyon Lake for 10 years and almost immediately dived into myriad clubs and events. She has served on the board and various committees of the Mermaids of Canyon Lake. She is currently vice president of the Canyon Lake Woman’s Club and has served on several of its committees.

Aprile has volunteered at many Canyon Lake events such as the 9-11 commemoration and the city Veterans Day event as a vocalist and an M.C.

She is seen throughout the community hosting multiple trivia nights and other similar events.

“I was told by Mayor Pro Tem Welty that you are known as ‘Singing Aprile’,” Mayor Jeremy Smith said at the Citizen of the Month presentation. “But, we know that you have done more than that in our community. You have given all kinds of time and energy doing all sorts of things in the community, so (picking you as Citizen of the Month) was an easy one for us.”

Jeremy said seeing Aprile perform at the recent National Day of Prayer put him over the top on the Citizen of the Month decision.

“For those who weren’t there, she did an incredible job,” he said. “It’s an honor to have your voice in our community.”
