Deadline for CLPOA Board voting ballots just weeks away

The deadline for turning in Canyon Lake Property Association ballots for the 2023 Annual Election is just a couple of weeks away.

The ballots must be in the mail by May 5, dropped at the ballot box at Bluebird Hall by May 10, or dropped off in person on May 11 at the Canyon Lake Lodge between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

For those who need a new ballot or have questions regarding the voting process, go to myhoavote.com.

For voters interested in learning more about the candidates they can read about the candidates at www.canyonlakepoa.com/election.

Three of the five seats on the Canyon Lake POA Board of Directors are up for election. The two-year terms of Renee Griffiths, Tim Cook, and Alex Cook are ending.

In addition to incumbents Renee and Alex, those running for the three seats are Jeanne O‘Dell, Chris Papavero, Jeff Bill and Joe Kamashian.

Rita Bendlin filed papers to run, but withdrew her candidacy on March 27.

Canyon Lake Senior Center photo contest deadline May 5

The Canyon Lake Senior Center is holding a photo contest where the winners’ photos will be displayed at the center. Winners receive gift cards for two local restaurants.

The entrants must include new photos of scenes from around Canyon Lake. One of the pictures submitted must include a view of The Lodge pool area with the Lighthouse in the background.

Winning photos will be enlarged and then displayed in frames in the Senior Center. It is important that submitted photos be high resolution and have enough pixels in the files to be able to be enlarged without the photo blurring.

The winners will receive gift cards. 1st place prize will be a $100 gift card for the Canyon Lake Country Club, and 2nd place prize will be a $75 gift card for PZA.

Mermaids of Canyon Lake to hold Derby Day April 29

Mermaids of Canyon Lake will hold its 2nd Annual Derby Day celebration on April 29 at 3:00 p.m. The event will be a private, reservations-only affair for current club members and their guests.

The organizers promise a fun-filled day, with a cruise around the lake, a boxed lunch, champagne (or seltzers), a Mint Julep and $10 in Mermaid “money.” The volunteer “horses” (guys on kayaks) will be doing three races during the afternoon while the spectators (women on the boats) cheer their horses on. The women watching the races are encouraged to wear as outlandish a hat as can be created.

Prizes will be awarded for the most fabulous hat and to whomever has the most mermaid money at the end. All proceeds will go to the Mermaids’ group of 2023 charities which include the Riverside Shelter for Abused Women and Children.

Space is limited, and only paid reservations will guarantee a spot on a boat. Members are encouraged to book early if they want to be put on the same boat with up to eight specific people. For those who are interested in knowing more about the Mermaids of Canyon Lake, they can attend the next general meeting on Monday at the Senior Center.

Mermaids is for all ages from 21 and over.

Social hour starts at 5:30 p.m. followed by the meeting. The meeting will include a special guest from the Helping Hands organization to explain the group’s participation in the community. Potential members are encouraged to come and join in the fun-filled night and learn more about the Mermaids of Canyon Lake.

Wakeboard Club’s popular Learn to Ride event May 7

The Canyon Lake Wakeboard Club’s first Learn to Ride Day, its most popular event, is May 7. The day is for all ages and skill levels. Those participating can expect to get tips and tricks from the club’s expert coaching staff and to enjoy some fun for the whole family. Gear is provided, if needed.

The fee for the Learn to Ride day is $35.00 or free for those with pull passes.

To join the club, email canyonlakewakeboardclub@gmail.com. Club members can purchase the Pull Pass for $115.00 ($80 for minis) which includes one ride at each event (five rides total), club shirt, End of the Year Event invitation, a special raffle and $5.00 off each additional division entered.

Individual Event pricing is three for $60 or $25 each for competitions ($20 for minis). Learn to Ride days are $35 each ($20 for minis).

Popular Santana tribute band tickets on sale for July concert

The Canyon Lake Guild sold out the Tom Petty Tribute Concert and expects the same with the Smooth Sounds of Santana on July 22, at 7:00 p.m. The concert will be held in the Holiday Bay Room at the Lodge. Expect to hear some of Santana‘s biggest hits.

The very talented musicians will capture the true spirit of Santana. The essence of Santana is in the multicultural sound, the tone of the electric guitars, sounds of keyboards along with the Latin percussion that make the sound of Santana so iconic.

Expect to hear Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va, Evil Ways, and many more of the favorites of Santana.

Tickets are on sale now at brownpapertickets.com or General Admission tickets can be purchased at the Canyon Lake POA office. The trend has been that these concerts sell out, hence the need to purchase tickets early.

Santana group takes place of canceled Earth, Wind & Fire

The Canyon Lake Fine Arts Guild was informed the Serpentine Band which is a tribute to Earth, Wind and Fire will not be playing its scheduled July 22 performance at the Canyon Lake Lodge.

The Guild quickly shifted gears and contracted a Santana Tribute Band for replacement on the same date. The Smooth Sounds of Santana, a Tribute to the Music of Carlos Santana is returning after playing to a sold out audience five years ago at the Lodge.

The band played in Canyon Lake on Oct. 2017. The tribute band offers the look, feel and sounds of Santana. The set list will include the most popular Santana hits. Tickets are available for purchase at CanyonLakeGuld.org or at the Canyon Lake POA office.

For those who purchased Earth, Wind and Fire tickets, they will be honored at the Santana Tribute Concert.

Other Canyon Lake Fine Arts Guild concert tickets are also for sale. The PettyBreakers Tribute Band will take the stage on April 1. The band is a tribute band to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 7:00 p.m. To purchase tickets go to www.brownpapertickets.com.

Canyon Lake Tribute Concert Season with the Guild also includes: HarborFest Concert, which is free to the Canyon Lake community, featuring Voyager, a Journey Tribute Band on Sept. 23 and Vegas McGraw, a Tim McGraw Tribute artist on Oct. 21.

C.L.E.A.R inviting youth to lifeguard camp

The C.L.E.A.R Foundation in partnership with the California State Parks and Lake Perris are holding a junior lifeguards camp June 19-30 for ages 8-15.

Sponsorships will be available again this year for those who want to attend and need financial assistance to do so.

To qualify for the camp, tryouts will be held at the Canyon Lake Lodge Pool on April 29. At the tryouts, swimmers must swim 100 yards in under three minutes and tread water for two minutes in order to qualify for the Lake Perris lifeguard program..

Bulky item pick ups can be scheduled online

CR&R, Canyon Lake’s contracted trash pick up company, provides the pick up of bulky items. The pickup of these items is available by scheduling on CR&R’s website, www.crrwasteservices.com, or by calling 800-755-8112.

Items that cannot fit in the curbside automated containers, such as a chair, couch, or other household appliances, are considered “bulky items.” Each residential customer is entitled to call and schedule a bulky item pick-up for no additional charge two times per calendar year, and each call can include up to two items.

Fire Department accepting expired fire extinguishers

The Canyon Lake Fire Department has implemented an out-of-service fire extinguisher program.

Old or expired fire extinguishers can be dropped off at the Canyon Lake Fire Department Station 1 located at 28730 Vacation Drive.

Not only do fire extinguishers have manufacture dates imprinted on them to help determine their expirations, but if they have rust or corrosion, they should be taken to the fire department for disposal.

ABC fire extinguishers are the most common home fire extinguishers. Their life expectancy can range between 10 and 12 years depending on how well the extinguisher has been maintained.

After each use, the extinguisher should be recharged, even if the extinguisher is not empty. This will help to ensure that the extinguisher contains enough pressure and suppressant chemicals to extinguish future fires. Fire extinguishers should be serviced by a trained professional.

This new fire department program is also being implemented to promote the acquisition of fire extinguishers by Canyon Lake residents.

The Canyon Lake Fire Department recommends and encourages residents to have at least two fire extinguishers. Households should have one on each floor of the house as well as one for the garage.

The fire department also said to Immediately replace any fire extinguishers that are deemed out-of-service. Fire extinguishers are great for putting out small fires that have just started, but if a fire is too big and out of control, residents should evacuate the house and call 911.

Center calling all seniors to join in on game days

The Canyon Lake Senior Center is inviting the community’s seniors to a couple of days of interesting and fun games on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Hand and Foot, a quick moving card game with the objective to be the first to rid a player‘s cards and for the team to take the most points is played on Monday’s at the Senior Center from noon to 4:00 p.m.

The Mahjongg Group meets on Tuesdays between noon and 4:00 p.m. at the Senior Center. Both Chinese and American styles are played.

POA seeking help with security camera footage

The Canyon Lake Property Owners Association is asking its members to volunteer to share home security camera footage when a criminal incident occurs near their home.

In partnership with the Riverside County Sheriff‘s Department, this program allows community residents with surveillance systems to voluntarily add themselves to a list that the Riverside County Sheriff‘s Department and the Canyon Lake POA may refer to if a criminal incident occurred nearby.

With the increased popularity of personal surveillance systems, including simple doorbell cameras, for residents and property owners, the use of the footage from these cameras has become useful to law enforcement. As crimes occur near a home with security cameras, owners may not be aware that their system may have captured helpful information that could help solve the crime.

After signing up on the Canyon Lake POA website for this program, when these criminal incidents occur, the Canyon Lake POA and/or law enforcement may contact those on the sign up list near the incident to help solve the crime by requesting to review their video footage their system may have captured. This information or footage may assist in apprehending and prosecuting the criminals involved.

Members would only be contacted by the Canyon Lake POA or law enforcement to request permission to view your camera footage if there is a criminal incident near their home.

“You are not giving the Canyon Lake POA or law enforcement access to your system or footage, but instead agreeing to be contacted if you have a camera that may have been in the vicinity of a criminal incident,” the Canyon Lake POA said. “Your participation in providing any camera footage is strictly voluntary. Information provided to the Canyon Lake POA regarding your camera systems will be for official use only. Your personal information will remain confidential and will not be distributed.’

Video surveillance is one of the best methods for apprehending criminals and convicting suspects caught in the act of committing a crime, the Canyon Lake POA said. While many own and operate personal surveillance systems that could aid in solving crimes, law enforcement officials are not always aware of who may have this potentially vital information.

By signing up for this program, residents are added to a list that may be quickly referenced to identify nearby cameras that may have captured criminal activity.
