Fire Station property to be sold to the city

The City of Canyon Lake, which on the first of last year established its own municipal fire department, has agreed to purchase the land on which its only fire station sits from the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association. The sale still needs to be approved by both the City Council and the CLPOA Board.

For decades, the Canyon Lake POA has leased the property on which the Fire Station sits on Vacation Drive to the county and more recently to the City of Canyon Lake. The fee for leasing the property was typically nominal.

Late last year, the Canyon Lake POA notified the city of an increase in the lease to something closer to the going rate for the space. The association was upping the lease from $1.00 a year to nearly $10,000 a month.

The huge increase resulted in extensive negotiations between the two Canyon Lake entities regarding the lease of the property to the city. The city offered to purchase the property from the Canyon Lake POA for $1,390,000 and on Monday, the association accepted the offer.

The Canyon Lake POA parking lot and launch ramp to the North Ski Area will not be included in the property the city purchases. The parking lot and launch ramp there will remain the Canyon Lake POA‘s property, and will continue to be used for the same purposes as before.

The Canyon Lake Board of Directors will be discussing this issue in further detail during its regularly-scheduled open session Board Meeting on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Likewise, the City of Canyon Lake will be addressing the sale at its next City Council meeting on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
