Canyon Lake shifts to county’s Second District, new supervisor

After a re-districting of the County of Riverside, the City of Canyon Lake is being moved from Supervisor Kevin Jeffries’ First District to Karen Spiegel’s Second District on Jan. 1.

The shift in districts moves Canyon Lake with the City of Lake Elsinore, along with the unincorporated areas of Lake Mathews, Temescal Valley, Woodcrest, Warm Springs, and Lakeland Village into the new district. The Second District will lose the western half of the City of Riverside and will keep the cities of Corona Eastvale, Jurupa Valley and Norco.

“I look forward to learning more about these areas and establishing relationships with our new constituents,” Karen said. “We say goodbye to the City of Riverside and thank them for being such a fantastic community.”

The final map approved and adopted by the Board of Supervisors last year is fully compliant with the Federal Voting Rights Act and the California Fair Maps Act, the county said.

Through rigorous statistical analyses by well-respected experts and consultants, the county ensured that all voters have a meaningful opportunity to elect the candidates of their choice. These analyses included citizen voting age population data, racially polarized voting analysis and an opportunity to elect report.

“The county and the community worked through an incredible amount of data, reports and feedback – all within an extremely shortened timeframe due to a delay by the federal government,” Karen, the board chair, said. “Thank you to all who participated in the process. The work of county government touches the daily lives of our residents and the fair and equal representation of how this work is governed is vitally important.”

Karen was elected to represent the Second Supervisorial District on Nov. 6, 2018, and was sworn into office on Jan. 8, 2019. Karen began her political career as the elected City Treasurer for the City of Corona in 1996. After six years as Treasurer, she ran for the City Council in 2002 and served the City of Corona as Council Member for 16 years, including serving as the mayor for four terms.

In addition to the service in her district, Karen represents Riverside County on the Regional and State level in many organizations and has served in a leadership role on several. She has been honored for her service with numerous awards and recognitions over the years.

Karen graduated from California State University, Long Beach and did her graduate studies at Pepperdine University, where she received a Master’s Degree and was a Marriage Family Therapist. Prior to coming to Corona in 1985, Karen spent 10 years working with juvenile delinquent boys (13-18) and their families in Long Beach. Her career has taken many paths from counseling, to electrical contracting and accounting, to publishing and marketing.

When she married Bobby in 1985, she came to Corona and worked in the family electrical contracting business, Corona Industrial Electric, Inc. until it closed in 1995. Bobby and Karen began Spiegel Enterprises & Publications in 1989 and she remains active in the local e-commerce and marketing business.

Karen and her husband Bobby of 36 years, have five adult children and two grandchildren. All five of their children have experienced domestic and international travel and have each received their Bachelor’s Degrees or higher.
