City Council extends Mayor Smith’s term

Jeremy Smith, who has served the past year as the City of Canyon Lake mayor, was unanimously voted by the City Council Wednesday to retain the position for the next year.

“This city means everything to my family and me,” Jeremy said after the vote. “I am honored to continue serving as mayor.”

The city council unanimously voted Dale Welty to hold the position of mayor pro-tem for the coming 12 months. Dale has served on the council since his election in 2020.

“I am honored to serve alongside you, Mayor Pro-Tem Dale Welty,” Councilmember Mark Terry said after the council voted on the mayor pro-tem position. “I know we made the perfect choice in voting you mayor pro-tem. Congratulations buddy.”

There were three openings up for election on the city council last month, but because the only ones to submit paperwork for election were the three incumbents, the city council exercised its option to appoint the three and avoid a costly election.

Those three, Jeremy, Kasey Castillo and Jennifer Dain, were sworn in at the meeting Wednesday. Kasey and Jennifer both commented on their support of Jeremy continuing as mayor.

“I’m encouraged to continue the momentum Mayor Smith and the council is on,” Kasey said. “Jeremy Smith is an excellent choice to continue as mayor.”

“I appreciate this opportunity to serve with the members of this board,” Jennifer said. “I am excited to have Mayor Jeremy Smith continue in his role.”
