Garden Club proposing community garden

The newly-sanctioned Canyon Lake Community Gardeners is working on a proposal to develop unused land between Canyon Lake Drive North and Outrigger Drive into a “passive park” that will be used for a community garden.

The intention of the club is to bring a community garden to Canyon Lake so residents as well as local clubs and organizations can grow produce and flowers in their own raised-bed allotment. The community garden would also be a place where gardening demonstrations and workshops could take place.

The Garden Club is working with the Canyon Lake POA Facilities Planning Committee to make a proposal to the POA Board of Directors for a concept plan to develop unused land between Canyon Lake Drive North and Outrigger Drive.

The plans would include landscaping, a walking path, community gardens and a children‘s garden. The walking path would extend to Outrigger Park, make its way to Evans Park and connect back at the new community garden area. The entire walking path would be approximately one mile.

The club has put together a petition for this project and is gathering signatures. If anyone would like to sign the petition, contact Kelly Lopez at 951-609-6723 or text Chris Papavero at 951-265-5075.

The club is holding a garage sale the weekend of Aug. 19 to raise funds and to make the petition available for signatures.

The Canyon Lake Community Gardeners meets monthly for casual meet ups to learn about gardening techniques and to share homegrown produce and plants. Meet ups are open to anyone who is interested in gardening, not just club members.

The club generally meets at a park in Canyon Lake, however, they sometimes will enjoy garden tours of other members‘ gardens. The next meet up will be at Holiday Harbor on Aug. 19 at 7:00 p.m. to learn about fall planting.
