Letter: Uvalde

Editor,
The Friday Flyer:

I wrote this poem in mourning for the tragedy in Uvalde, Texas. I hope we, as a community and as a larger nation, can move forward in remembrance and hope.

Let me not wonder as to reunite

My mem’ry of him with what is still here,

As shards of glass reflect the wretched sight

Of haunting spirits who howl from the mirr’r.

And though his comfort is beheld, my eyes

Accept no consolation from his ghost,

For this bleak mem’ry still rolls, terrifies,

The haunted ghoul who weeps and loves him most.

No, I will not cease childish screams till death,

For the one taken from this life, so young.

No, I will not cease my screams till last breath,

Or Hades hears, and my string is unstrung.

No, I will not cease my screams for him though

His friends forget their greatest shame,

As they forget their friend who helped them grow

Themselves to fit their frame,

And thus, I’ll scream his name.
