Canyon Lake student wins science award

Wren Gully, a Canyon Lake Temescal Canyon High School student, won the 2022 American Meteorological Society Regional Award at the International Science and Engineering Fair. The award was provided as part of the affiliation with Regeneron ISEF.

Wren’s award was presented at the conclusion of the 2022 Virtual Riverside County Science and Engineering Fair which was held online on March 15.

A total of 398 students from 25 affiliate fairs represented public, charter, and private schools, and presented their findings in 307 projects spanning 19 subject matter categories from Biochemistry and Behavioral and Social Sciences, to Microbiology and Robotics and Intelligent Machines.

Canyon Lake receives $780K for water purification

The Canyon Lake Water Treatment Plant, offline for several months because of elevated levels of PFAS chemicals were discovered in the water’s runoff, will receive funding of $780,000 as part of $1.5 trillion from the 2022 Consolidated Appropriations Act that President Joe Biden signed on March 15.

Canyon Lake’s Congressional Rep. Ken Calvert secured $18.6 million for projects in his 42nd District that includes Canyon Lake, Corona, Lake Elsinore, Menifee, Murrieta, most of Temecula, Wildomar and other nearby areas.

The $780,000 will be used for Phase 1 of the Canyon Lake Water Treatment Plant Improvements Project, which Calvert requested on behalf of the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District. The project will upgrade the treatment plant so it will be able to clean water to meet the California regulatory limit and open back up.

Travel Club to visit Cirque Du Soleil, Central Coast

The Canyon Lake Travel Club has a couple of upcoming events on its itinerary. First, the club is gearing up for a destination trip to see Cirque Du Soleil presents OVO at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on April 24 for a 1:00 p.m. performance that will last for two hours. The cost of the event is $121 per person for members and $126 per person for non-members. The cost includes coach transportation, logo level show ticket, snacks, water and bus drivers gratuity. Accessible seating is available. The bus will leave Canyon Lake Eastport lower parking lot at 10:30 a.m. and will return at 6:30 p.m.  Restaurants are near the theater for after-the-show dinners.

Reservations must be received no later than April 7. Then, In June, the Canyon Lake Travel Club is heading to Hearst Castle and will spend four days and three nights visiting the Central California Coast.

Included in the trip’s package is deluxe motor coach travel with a professional tour director, a grand tour of Hearst Castle, three wine tastings in Paso Robles, and visits to Cambria, Santa Barbara and Solvang are all on the itinerary for the excursion.

This trip is planned for June 6 through June 9 and the cost is $995.00 per person with double occupancy or $1195.00 for single occupancy. The trip includes three nights at Springhill Suites by Marriott.

A deposit of $200.00 is due now to hold a place for the trip and final payment is due on May 5.

Pet shelter to hold FORE golf tournament

The Animal Friends of the Valleys is hosting its annual charity golf tournament at Bear Creek Golf Club on April 25 and is inviting Canyon Lake golfers to participate.

The 14th annual charity tournament is being held to support life-saving programs at Animal Friends of the Valleys, which provides pet shelter services for various area cities and communities in Southwest Riverside County, including the City of Canyon Lake.

At $150 per player or $500 per foursome, the golf tournament is an opportunity to help the shelter animals find their forever homes. FORE the Animals Golf Tournament will kick off with registration opening up at 10:00 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 11:00 a.m.

During the tournament, participants will have the opportunity to compete in contests such as the longest drive, a hole-in-one, closest to the pin, and putting games. Trophies will be awarded at a banquet following the tournament.

As part of the fundraising tournament, a unique silent auction will also be held.

“Animal Friends of the Valleys is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated to promoting humane care of animals through education and a humane, pro-active animal service programs,” the organization’s Beth Soltysiak said. “We are committed to preventing the suffering of animals and to ending pet overpopulation in the communities we serve.”

Junior Tennis lessons available for kids, 6-12

Canyon Lake kids ages six to 12 interested in learning a new sport or maybe perfecting their game are being invited to participate in lessons at the Canyon Lake Tennis Courts.

The lessons will be given by Canyon Lake Head Tennis Pro Bobby Kielty on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Beginner and Intermediate levels will include tennis activities such as building the participant’s speed, agility, strength and more.
