Golf clubs come together for ‘divot party’

More than 70 Canyon Lake golfers came together on a foggy Monday morning to spread out over all 18 holes of the Canyon Lake Golf Course and repair divots. The “divot party” proved essential and successful as hundreds of brown divots among the green grass were repaired.

The divot sanding event was organized by the Tuesday Work Group and members of all the community golf clubs joined in. Members of the Canyon Lake Men’s Golf Club, the Canyon Lake Women’s Golf Club, the Canyon Lake 9ers Golf Club, the Family Golf Club and a few other golfers grabbed buckets of sand mixture and filled each of the divots over the entire course.

The volunteers braved a foggy morning with temperatures as low as 43 degrees to help repair the course. With so many participating, the task was simplified dramatically.

The golf course was closed on Monday to golfers, so the timing of the “divot party” was perfect.

The divots are caused by golfers whose swings dig into the grass and cut into the dirt. Golf etiquette has golfers replacing the divot before moving on with the round. However, divots aren’t always repaired and over time, the course gets pockmarked.

Divot trucks drove around the course Monday to make sure that the volunteers had enough divot mix to fill the holes.

After a quick gathering that included some hot coffee and muffins, the group headed out onto the course to complete the task. They spread out over the course on golf carts to find the divots and repair them. Carts parked and each of the volunteers walked each hole to ensure every divot was filled.

The course was covered in just a few short hours. With the divots filled, the course will fill in again and be consistently green.
