Fall Picnic exceeds goals

The Canyon Lake Newbies and Social Club put on its second annual Fall Picnic and Operation Care Package to a crowd of 125 guests who had fun with games and BBQ and who stuffed far more care packages than had been anticipated.

The event at Holiday Harbor Park Saturday included a free BBQ lunch that was provided by sponsors of the event.

Bradley Morton, co-founder of the club, said he was excited to not only meet the goal of 50 completed care packages, but to exceed it by 27. The group completed 77 care packages in total that will be distributed to members of the military who are away from home.

Kids at the picnic participated in face painting, pounding piñatas, a Nerf Gun Battle Royale and the main event, “The Great Canyon Lake Turkey Hunt.”

“I couldn’t have been more pleased to sponsor this event and support our troops,” Steve Wilcox, owner of Stix Moving and father of three, said. “We are always looking for fun, family-friendly activities and this event did it all. We had the chance to meet new friends all while enjoying fun activities as a family and being able to enjoy the wonderful BBQ lunch. All this while supporting our troops.”

Newbies Club co-founder Jonda Morton said the club already has plans for making next year’s fall picnic even bigger and better.

“As always, Canyon Lake really stepped up to the plate and supported our US Troops,” Jonda said. “As a Navy veteran, I know firsthand how nice it is to receive a care package from home, so I couldn’t be more proud of what our Social Club has accomplished for the second year in a row.”

Another excited parent and supporter of the event, Mike Simms, owner of Real Deals Liquidation, said the Turkey Hunt was hilarious!

“My kids had a blast running around chasing those turkeys,” Mike said. “What a creative and fun event. I’m sure my kids will remember it for a lifetime.”

The turkeys that were being hunted by crazed kids with Nerf guns were the men dressed in turkey costumes.

“Wow, you don’t realize how out of shape you are until it’s 90 degrees outside and you find yourself dressed up like a wild turkey and there are 40 kids chasing you around firing Nerf Guns at you,” Bradley said. “I might have been flapping my wings like a turkey, but I was panting like an old dog and sweating like a piggy. It was exhausting, but well worth it.”
