Kids Fishing Derby set for tomorrow

Canyon Lake’s kids, ages five to 15, are set to flock to the lake and throw their hooks in with hopes of catching the whopper. The Canyon Lake Kids Fishing Derby takes place tomorrow (Saturday) and it’s been a long wait.

The fishing derby last year was canceled because of the COVID-19 restrictions which prohibited such gatherings. With the waning infections and outdoor
activities deemed especially safe, the derby is back. The Canyon Lake Bassmaster Club is holding its annual Kid Fishing Derby tomorrow and trophies and other prizes are awaiting those who bring in the biggest haul.

Those kids who want to participate need to just show up between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. at Holiday Harbor Park tomorrow to sign up. Parents must register and sign a consent form in order for their child to participate.

Live worms will be handed out at registration while supplies last and kids can begin fishing anywhere on the lake once they are registered until 11:00 a.m.

Catches must be weighed in between 11:00 a.m and noon. Participants who are not in line by noon will not be eligible for trophies.

Bass are excluded and if caught should be released back into the lake. No more than three fish per species may be weighed in.

Trophies will be presented at 1:00 p.m. in three age groups: ages five to seven, eight to 11 and 12 to 15. A “Big Fish” trophy for each species will be awarded to one boy and one girl.

Every participant will receive a prize for participating and a few lucky kids will go home with new bicycles. There will also be a complimentary hot dog lunch served at the snack bar at noon.

The Canyon Lake Bassmasters Club is a nonprofit organization.

In addition to sponsoring and running the annual Kids Fishing Derby, the Bassmasters Club also holds monthly fishing tournaments.
