Letter: Greater issues in Canyon Lake than sign controversy

Editor, The Friday Flyer:

Last week we participated in a workshop on the flags being flown in our community and the two sides of the issue agreed on several items. Now, while we all eagerly await the board’s decision, one side of this argument has decided to publish more divisive rhetoric prior to the board’s ruling. The way many of us see it, the board should only adopt the items we were able to agree on and close the book on this issue.

I would like to ask the folks who believe these flags have hidden meaning and are tied to racism to please explore the origins of the flags in question and not rely on conspiracy theories or media interpretation. Get to know your neighbor instead of screaming at them, participate in events instead of isolating yourself and come out from behind the keyboard to see all this community has to offer you.

To put things in perspective of how much this is a “non-issue,” here are a few things that happened to members of our community recently:

A fisherman discovered the dead body of a young man in our lake.

We have an accused pedophile living in our community.

A young woman from our community was brutally beaten yesterday.

We have scheduled fights with our youth taking place in our parks.

Somebody’s house caught on fire last week.

A resident undergoing cancer treatment had his handicap placard and wife’s CPR kit stolen out of his car.

The point I am making is this: there are far greater issues that we should be worrying about and working together to solve. Please step away from social media and engage in real conversations with the amazing people who live here and be a part of the community rather than constantly condemning it.
