The Canyon Lake 9ers Golf Club were determined to don green and hit the greens to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day despite being delayed by rain that pushed the tournament past the holiday. Instead, the club’s golfers spent March 18 on the Canyon Lake Golf Course all dressed in Irish garb for its monthly tournament.
Each 9er selected a symbol, “Pot of Gold”, “Shamrock”, “Rainbow” or “Irish Hats” to designate which player would tee off at each hole. Once the player drove the green ball, the other team members hit from where the designated green ball landed.
To add to the fun, a “Closest to the Blarney Stone” was also part of the game. Winners of the Closest to the Blarney Stone were Beth Trinkaus and Tess Welsh.
The 1st Place winners of the tournament were the foursome of Kathy Sanchez, Linda Kielty, Nancy Tice and Sandy Dawson. Other finishers were 2nd Place: Dorothy Washle, Helen Sullivan, Kim Robinson and Rita Crocker; 3rd Place: Becky Bowie, Claudia Pinto, Rose Girard and Diane Faris and 4th Place: Betty Henry, Carla Cords, Carol Paulis and Martha Golia.
Four members won Chip-ins awards: Kathy Sanchez, Rose Girard, Carol Pallis and Betty Henry.
To keep with social distancing, the luncheon afterward consisted of a box lunch provided by the Canyon Lake Country Club as the players gathered “on the green” of the driving range to eat in their golf carts and enjoy the festivities.
The 9er’s Golf Club meets on Thursdays to play 9 holes of golf. Women with any skill level are invited to join, said club member Mavis Schutz.
