Canyon Lake 25th safest city in state

After analyzing violent and property crimes from 294 midsize California cities, a report released this week named the City of Canyon Lake the 25th safest midsize city in the state.

AdvisorSmith, a small business research company, conducted the study and said crime scores were calculated for each midsize city (populations between 10,000 and 100,000 residents) and the cities were ranked to find the safest places to live in California.

Canyon Lake had a crime score of 18.3, which was well below the average of 46.8 for midsize cities.

Canyon Lake’s violent crime rate was 5.1 per 1,000 residents, compared with an average of 8.1 per 1,000 across all midsize cities.

The city’s property crime rate was 6.5 per 1,000 residents. Statewide, the average property crime rate in midsize cities was 21.3 per 1,000.

Among midsize cities in California, the average crime score was 46.8. The range of crime scores spanned from 6 to 310 with the City of Imperial topping the list and Emeryville at the bottom of the list.

Canyon Lake was determined to be the safest midsize city in Riverside County. Only Eastvale, ranked #45, is in the county’s Top 50 Safest Cities.

Nearby cities Wildomar (#76), Menifee (#88), Lake Elsinore (#182) and Perris (#191) all ranked lower than Canyon Lake. Both Murrieta (#3) and Temecula (#12) ranked high in the Safest Large City category.

AdvisorSmith analyzed data published by the FBI to find the cities in California with the lowest levels of reported crime on a population-adjusted basis. Its analysis relied upon crime reports from cities across the state to form crime scores which reflect the level of reported crimes adjusted for population.

Each crime score assigns a higher weight to more serious crimes such as murder and rape, while giving less weight to property crimes. The average crime score for cities in the Golden State was 82, while the range of scores was as low as 5 and as high as 8,248 across all three population categories.
