Now-open golf course welcomes events

The Canyon Lake Golf Course reopened Monday after the annual closure for overseeding. Golfers, eager to get back onto the course, have plenty of opportunities.

The fundraiser takes place this weekend for Matt Guzzino, a Murrieta police officer who grew up in Canyon Lake and was critically injured as his police cruiser was responding to assist in a vehicle pursuit earlier this month. Those playing golf over the weekend will have the opportunity to donate to the fund that has been set up to support his family during this time of recovery and rehabilitation.

Matt was hospitalized on Oct. 1 after he was cut out of his overturned SUV and was taken by helicopter to the hospital. In ICU and intubated, Matt had surgeries to repair a lower leg. He had severe pulmonary contusions on his lungs as well. He was released on last week from the hospital to begin physical therapy and follow up treatment.

The Canyon Lake Men’s Golf Club’s Monster Tournament is set for Nov. 14 at 8:00 a.m. The format is two best balls of the foursome.

“Jerry Watson, our Major Tournament director, has plans for participants to experience our course in quite a different layout,” the club’s president Barry Talbot, said. “COVID-19 restrictions continue, so no cash payments will be accepted.”

The entry fee for the Monster Tournament is $25.00, plus $5.00 team skins, for a total of $30.00 per player or $35.00 if they enter the individual Closest to Pin option. Entry fees must be paid by check and placed in an envelope where the golfer’s name should be written. Preferably, all four player’s names and their four checks will be included in the same envelope for the entire team. The deadline for dropping off the entry fees and names at the Pro Shop is Nov. 12.

The Canyon Lake Women’s Golf Club is also holding a tournament this month. It’s Member/Member tournament includes three days of golf on Nov. 17, 21 and 24.

“The format is partner’s eclectic the first two days,” Women’s Golf Club President Ina Pickard said. “The last day is the fun part. It’s scotch doubles, which basically means you hit your partner’s shot and she hits yours. It certainly makes for an interesting day.”

The deadline to sign up for the tournament is Nov. 10. The cost is $40.00 and includes lunch and awards on the last day.

Those interested in participating should contact Donna Nunes, Lorrie Applegate, Linda Kamashian or Linda Johnson.
