Man jailed after trying to kill mom

Mark Vermillion

Mark Vermillion, 61, was arrested last week on charges of attempting to murder his mother at her South Fork Drive home in Canyon Lake.

Canyon Lake deputies responded to the house after Mark called and allegedly said he had just attempted to murder his mother with a hacksaw. Police said they arrived and located the victim in the master bedroom of the home with half of her right foot severed. Deputies said they immediately performed lifesaving measures.

She was transported to the Inland Valley Medical Center and is listed in stable condition. Lake Elsinore Station Investigations Bureau officials arrived at the home and served a search warrant. During the search, investigators said they located a possible note left by the suspect.

Mark was transported to the Cois Byrd Detention Center and booked on charges of attempted murder, torture, mayhem and elder abuse. Bail was originally set at $1 million, but on Wednesday was increased to $2 million.
