Dozens turn out to raise Alzheimer’s awareness

Carrie Barker, at age 61, was diagnosed earlier this year with Younger-Onset Alzheimer’s. Her family decided to put together an event that would bring Alzheimer’s awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. And dozens of Canyon Lakers showed up to show support.

The group decided to walk to end Alzheimer’s. They began the trek at Gault Field and finished at Happy Camp.

The Barker family has been a part of the Canyon Lake community since 1989. Carrie’s son, Mark Barker and his wife Erin Barker set up a booth with donuts and coffee at Gault Field. Family and friends gathered at the baseball field and started their walk down to Happy Camp, where at the finish line everyone celebrated with refreshments and conversation.

“The amount of love and support for Carrie while she navigates this new chapter in her life was beautiful to see,” Erin said. “The community really came together and walked for a great cause.”
