With COVID-19 restricting its usual league play, The Canyon Lake Tennis Club took advantage of rare cool weather Saturday and held its intra-club September Mixer Tournament at the local lakeside tennis courts.

While USTA leagues have been put on hold during the pandemic, the Tennis Club has scheduled social events like Saturday’s tournament. The event is held within the restrictions in place by the local governments and the Canyon Lake POA where players can play amongst themselves without masks on the court and the group size remaining below 30 people.

“It’s great that our community continues these tennis activities and it’s one of the best advantages to living in this city,” Jennifer Denson said.

The tournament was organized and run by Canyon Lake Tennis Club President Bobby Kielty and Club Tournament Directors Kathy Valdez and Sheila Steele.

The winning team consisted of members Dan Roque, Becky Gagnon, Melissa Bol, Joe Cruz, Dawn Wessel, Jim Barringham, and Luis Armijo. The high individual men’s score was earned by Dan Roque and the highest women’s score was had by Melissa Bol.

All Canyon Lake residents are encouraged to come out to the courts and play social tennis every Monday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The Tennis Club welcomes all levels of players, whether they be beginners or find themselves returning to tennis after time away from the sport.
