WGC cancels tourneys, continues regular golfing

COVID-19 restrictions have hit the Canyon Lake Women’s Golf Club particularly hard. President Ina Pickard recently announced tournaments on the 2020 calendar will likely be canceled, with a slim hope its popular Christmas Tournament may still take place.

“With the closing of the clubhouse once again, the board has decided to cancel yet another tournament, our very popular Couples Eclectic,” Ina said. “With the COVID-19 virus picking up its pace in California and in our own Canyon Lake, we probably will be forced to cancel the remaining tournaments for the year. We are hoping against hope that we will be able to have our most popular tournament of the year, our Christmas Tournament.”

Despite the dire tournament news, the club continues with its regular weekly golf activities. Regularly, weekly play begins with the club showing up at the same time, socializing, meeting and then going out on the course using a shotgun start (where individual player foursomes go to the different 18 holes and begin play at once). Now, Ina said the club play is regular tee times since they are prohibited from meeting as a group first.

“We all miss the camaraderie of our morning meetings and our lunches at the clubhouse,” she said. “But we are still out there golfing.”

A skins game takes place each week and the weekly games have been added back into the mix, making things seem a little more normal, she said.
