9ers Golf Club gives nine scholarships

Nine Canyon Lake students received $12,000 in total scholarship funds this week from The Canyon Lake 9ers Golf Club.

These Canyon Lake young women received the college scholarship checks at a unique COVID-19-friendly ceremony. Club members drove through Canyon Lake in a caravan of decorated golf carts while honking horns and smiling along the way as they visited the home of each recipient.

The girls were presented with vase flower arrangement bouquets, their scholarship checks and balloons.

“What a fabulous time both the club members and the recipients had,” Mavis Shutz, the club’s publicity chairperson, said. “It was memorable and so worthwhile!”

The 9ers fund raise at its Scholarship Golf Tournament each year to fund the scholarships. Last year, the club gave scholarships to four young women. The 9ers Golf Club had raised a total of $20,000 the previous four years combined. This year the club was able to raise significantly more scholarship money.

“Our 9ers group donated a total of $12,000 to those nine girls!” Mavis said. “That is quite an accomplishment for our relatively small group and in these hard times!”

To qualify for the scholarships, each recipient needed to be a Canyon Lake young woman and be graduating from high school this year. Applicants must have achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average and have been actively involved in school activities, a sports team and community service with plans to attend college in the fall semester.

Those receiving the scholarships this year are:  Ryleigh Barckley, Destiny Loney, Kirsten Ha, Kaitlyn Crippen, Abby Siroky, Abby Signorio, Cassidy Potter, Amanda Martilla and Brianna Martilla.
