Despite the heavy rainfall, Canyon Lake residents Grace and Steve Thompson opened the doors to their new business, Decompress Express, located in the Towne Center next to New Hope Community Church, at 31534 Railroad Canyon Rd. last year. The motto of the business is to release, relax and recharge.

The most popular 30 minute Express service option includes 10 minutes of inversion therapy and whole body vibration (WBV), 10 minutes of resting on a rolling decompression table and 10 minutes of breathing in scented oxygen while laying on a hot gemstone and infrared table with PEMF.

With inversion therapy, a person is suspended upside down for several minutes. The aim is to relieve back pain or similar ailments. According to Medical News Today, the use of inversion therapy can be beneficial for “short-term management of back pain.”

Inversion can “take the pressure off a person’s spine, open up the vertebrae and increase circulation.” The process is also known to help relieve stress, improve flexibility, increase blood flow to the brain, improve mental alertness and help with improving posture.

The next step is to find your balance on the vibration plate. The whole-body vibration, commonly known as “Power Plate” exercise, came about from a program used to train Russian cosmonauts. The idea spread through Europe, Japan and into the United States. In this exercise, one stands on the platform with knees bent to around a 30 degree angle, the surface beneath the feet begins vibrating at a rate of about 30 times per second.

According to physical therapist and personal trainer Ben Quist, DPT, the vibration “tricks the body into thinking you’re falling.” “This, in turn, activates the ‘stress reflex’, an extremely rapid muscle contraction,” says Quist.

The staff at Decompress Express boasts that the vibration exercise can help to increase bone density and muscle mass, improve circulation, reduce joint and back pain, alleviate stress and help to boost metabolism.

The second phase of service includes 10 minutes laying in a dark room, with the music of your choice, on a rolling spinal decompression table. The table works using a type of motorized traction that can provide relief for back pain.

According to WebMD, spinal decompression works by gently stretching the spine which takes pressure off spinal discs by creating a negative pressure in the disc. This type of therapy can help with back or neck pain, bulging or herniated discs, sciatica, worn spinal joints and injured or diseased spinal nerve roots.

The final 10-minute step of the process is full or targeted pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF), on a hot gemstone and infrared mat, while breathing in oxygen with your choice of aromatic scent to enhance the experience.

According to Innovative Medicine, “the treatment works by emitting a pulsating, varying intensity and frequency electromagnetic field.”

The use of PEMF has been endorsed by Dr. Oz for those struggling with ailments such as swollen joints and chronic pain.

The team at Decompress Express say that PEMF can improve blood flow, increase energy and oxygen levels, promote cellular healing, reduce pain significantly, promote faster healing of injuries, stimulate the release of endorphins, relax muscles and reduce stress.

The use of oxygen also has many benefits such as providing energy, strengthening the heart, improving the immune system, countering headaches and sharpening concentration, alertness and memory.

The services offered at Decompress Express may not be safe for those who are pregnant, have an electronic device implantation such as a pacemaker or hearing aid, have had surgery, or who have any medical spine or bone condition.

Offered separately is the 10 minute ‘Bum Express’ sculpting workout in a state of the art targeted work out area. This session can be used to learn about the gluteal region and train with music and complimentary water.

Decompress Express is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. or from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. for the Full Decompress service option which is available by appointment only.
