CLAPPS to host Beautification Tournament

For more than 35 years, the men golfers of Canyon Lake have sponsored an annual golf tournament raising money to beautify the Canyon Lake course. In these 35 plus years, more than $55,000 has been raised solely to enhance the course.

In the past, the tournament was conducted at one time or another by the Men’s Golf Club, the Green Committee and the Canyon Lake Association of Past Presidents (CLAPPS). This year, CLAPPS will be hosting the tournament, which is set for Saturday, Apr. 27. The entry fee is $45 and includes lunch. Green fee and cart fee are not included. Players will tee off with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

The will be three flights of Partners Best Ball for players with an established handicap: “Jack & Jack,” “Jack & Jill” and “Jill & Jill.” Players can pick their own partner and foursome or enter as a single and be placed in a group. There also is a Scramble flight for players without an established handicap.

Signups are taken at the Golf Pro Shop at the country club. The deadline to sign up is Apr. 24.

In the beginning, this event was called the Tree Tournament and hundreds of trees were planted on the course, which at the time was almost treeless. Since then, other than just trees and plants, some of the improvements were the enlarging of the putting green, 13 new benches around the course, tee box markers, a new street clock and a building to cover the range ball dispenser, to name a few. Future projects under consideration will be influenced by the redesign of the parking lot and country club entrance and the redesign of the golf course lake.
