Announcement: Lieutenant retires after 27 years of service

Canyon Laker David Torkelson retired from the San Diego Sheriff’s Department on Mar. 27. Prior to joining the Sheriff’s Department, David served in the United States Marine Corps. from 1986 to 1990, where he served at Camp Pendleton and Atsugi Naval Air Facility in Japan.

David entered the San Diego Sheriff’s 10th Corrections Academy in May 1991. He served with distinction rising through the ranks of corporal, sergeant and retiring as detentions lieutenant.

As a corrections lieutenant, David served as Assistant Facility Commander at the Las Colinas Detentions Reentry Facility and the Vista Detention Facility.

His accomplishments while working for the San Diego Sheriff’s Department include serving at the Standard Training Corrections Academy and In-Service Training, webmaster for the Jail Information Management System (JIMS) project and serving on the development team for the new women’s detention facility in Santee, California.

David and his wife Jill moved from Oceanside to Canyon Lake in June 2015. The couple said they chose Canyon Lake for retirement because of the affordability, beauty and amenities. Now that he’s retired, David said he looks forward to making greater use of the amenities and activities Canyon Lake has to offer and plans to spend time relaxing by the pool they recently had installed.
