Tennis Club prepares for active, involved year

The Canyon Lake Tennis Club held its first tournament of the year, the New Year’s New Member Mixer, on January 9. The club’s next tournament is the Valentine’s Doubles Mixer on Saturday, February 6, at 9 a.m. Players can sign up with a partner or have one paired with them, and red attire is encouraged.

The fee to participate is $12 per member, and the deadline to sign up is Wednesday, February 3. Contact Peggy Basubas at 951-719-7949.

A76-PIC-1-Tennis-Club-board-pro-by-Marga-KiddThe Tennis Club held its first board meeting of 2016 on January 4 at the home of Ed and Peggy Basubas. Board members are President Marga Kidd, Vice-President Val Gambina, Secretary Susan Muscarella, Treasurer Monica Hempel, Tournament Directors Ed and Peggy Basubas and Social Directors Tom Bol and Melissa Recla.

Assistants to the board are Mary Jaramillo, Facebook/webmaster; Ronale Rhodes, PR; Dave Harrigan, Open/Social Play; and Junior Program, Bobby Kielty.

At their January 4 meeting, the group discussed club play and events, USTA competitive play, the Junior Program, open/social play and the club’s philanthropic endeavors. The club annually makes a $1,000 donation to the tennis programs at Temescal Canyon High School and Elsinore High School. Members also collect and donate clothes and shoes to veterans, make a Thanksgiving donation to HOPE, and give toys to the Street Carts Christmas Toy Drive.

According to President Marga Kidd, the club also is prepared to donate $1,000 to purchase a bench for the new POA Bench Program, and is ready to buy furniture “if we ever get that (tennis) building!”

Kids and adult lessons will start Monday, January 18. These classes are for beginners or for those who want to get back into tennis. Tennis Pro Baba Soysa will put students into the appropriate class for their level. One-hour group lessons are $12.50 each.

Junior Manager Bobby Kielty will be working with Juniors, intermediate to advanced, starting Thursday, January 14, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Contact Marga for details.
