Kandis Perez was a “people person” stuck in a 9-to-5 job until she discovered her calling and purchased Studio K Tanning in the Towne Center. Today, Kandis is enjoying her new life and new career as she meets the people and learns about the community of Canyon Lake.

When a friend, who owns a tanning salon in Upland, told her that a salon was available for sale in Canyon Lake, Kandis knew it was her chance of a lifetime. Her boyfriend lives in Canyon Lake, so Kandis already had a feeling of the community and the “mom and pop” atmosphere she wanted her salon to have.

“It’s all about the relationships you establish,” she says. Kandis took classes and learned as much as she could about tanning; the good and the bad. With the schooling she has received, Kandis has become very interested in the “behind the scenes” of tanning.

She notes that any type of tanning can be bad; but that using a tanning bed is “controlled and monitored” to the individual’s skin. This, according to Kandis, “can make it better than a day in the sun.” She notes that her different types of tanning beds help with their different levels, saying, “It also helps dry out oily skin, helps with body acne, opens pores and provides vitamin D, which helps with that vitamin’s deficiency (common in women), produces melanin (gives skin color and protection) and provides energy.

Kandis says it's good come in and get a base tan before summer. Clients are able to choose the concentration and level of rays, UVB and UVA, based on an evaluation of the client’s skin type and preferences.

“It’s refreshing and rejuvenating,” she says. “It is also super physically and mentally relaxing,” says Kandis, adding that eight out of ten people actually fall asleep.

In addition to the tanning beds, Studio K also offers a safe alternative method by using custom airbrush tanning. For those who didn’t know there is a difference between airbrush and spray she explains it like this: spray tanning is entirely by and within a machine while airbrush is with a person holding the tanning gun and directing the spray.

Kandis says she uses a DHA solution that is totally safe. “It lasts about seven to ten days; as long as it takes skin to rejuvenate,” she says.

Kandis lives in Menifee with her two children: daughter McKyla (14) and son Braylon (4). Her son often comes with her to her salon. “It’s like a little community here in the Center,” says Kandis and adds that “Braylon loves playing with the son of the neighbor business.” They all enjoy spending time with Kandis’ boyfriend in Canyon Lake, especially the feeling of community and “oneness” that she feels so strongly about.

She plans to keep the clothing simple and “resort-like” with Canyon Lakers in mind by carrying clothes that are light and summery. With summer coming up, she plans to add more swim/sun suits, hats and cover-ups. She also wants to support local designers and plans to check options for her boutique.

Kandis says her prices are competitive, if not low, when compared with local and larger chain salons. She will be holding periodic specials for Canyon Lakers saying, “I’m still trying to figure out my clientele.” Right now she is giving 50 percent off a bottle of lotion when a new client signs up for three months of tanning (rates are different for the different beds). Call for details!

Studio K Tanning is located at 31700 Railroad Canyon Rd., Suite 4, in the central courtyard of the Towne Center. The phone number is 951-244-8826. Kandis can also be reached and texted at 951-722-8993. Kandis would love for everyone to come check out her salon. She’ll give the grand tour, explain the ups and downs of tanning, and offer her friendship!
