Canyon Lakers are invited to join the Canyon Lake Family Matters Club at a family fun night fundraising event at Troy’s Pizza Oven in the Towne Center on Wednesday, March 18, from 7 to 9 p.m.

“This is a great way to support the club and a local business,” says organizer Shawna Bowen. Troy’s will be donating a percentage of the proceeds back to the club for upcoming events. The evening will include games, crafts and prize drawings.

The Family Matters Club normally meets on the first day of each month at various locations. But this month, members changed up their routine so they could meet on a warm, sunny afternoon to paint tiles at Southpaw Ceramics in the Towne Center (next door to Domino’s Pizza). They invited community participation.

According to Shawna, on Saturday, March 7, the club put up easy-ups outside Southpaw Ceramics, along with tables and chairs. As people arrived, they chose their tile to paint and loaded a plate with paint.

“Lots of families took advantage of a super cute idea of making children’s footprints on the tiles, which were then turned into beautiful butterflies,” says Shawna. “We had a great turnout and everyone really enjoyed themselves. Almost everyone wanted to know when they could come back.”

Shawna says one of the reasons behind the change of routine for its regular club meeting was to “help out our Towne Center, Chamber of Commerce and local businesses. We choose South Paw Ceramics for this. What a wonderful place full of fun ceramics to paint. The owner (Patty Crockett) is the sweetest woman, and so accommodating and helpful.”

Shawna says the activity also supported Domino’s by purchasing pizza lunch for everyone, complete with salad, cookies and beverages. “We thank everyone for coming out and look forward to seeing everyone at our April meeting.”

In addition to their monthly meetings, members of the Family Matters Club also take field trips. Members enjoyed a February field trip to De Jong’s Dairy in Wildomar where they got to see how cows are milked and the milk bottled. The children also got a chance to pet and feed the cows, goats, birds and pigs. After that they enjoyed fresh chocolate milk with cookies and stayed for a picnic lunch. Other recent field trips have included visits to Fire Station 60, Stater Brothers, the Orange Empire Railway Museum and the Fingerprints Museum in Hemet. For more information, call 714-394-4885. The club also has a Facebook page.
