Roadrunners enjoy final stay at RV park

The Canyon Lake Roadrunners traveled for a final visit to the Chula Vista RV Park and Marina. The resort is scheduled to close in February as the Port of San Diego is making improvements to the property that do not include an RV Park. Not to be deterred, the Roadrunners had a great trip lead by Wagon Masters Helen Carson and Dave Bradley.

A highlight of the trip was a day-cruise on the tall ship Bill of Rights, a 136 foot Gaff-rigged Schooner whose home port is the Chula Vista Marina, a short walk from the RV park.

Club members enjoyed the six-hour cruise of San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean. “Even those who confessed they get seasick easily said they enjoyed the cruise,” said member Steve Thorsted “Many laughs were had watching those with sea legs when they hit shore.”

The games for this trip included ladder golf and basket toss. The ladder golf winners are Jennifer Carlson in the women’s division and Steve Thorsted in the men’s division. Basket toss was swept by the Thorsteds, Ellen in the women’s division and Steve in the men’s division. The golfers again tested their skills at the Bonita Golf Club.

The last dinner was luau-themed with entertainment after dinner. Helen Carson and her band of amateur thespians put on four acts while the comedy duo of Chuck and Joy Call acted as Masters of Ceremony. Act one was the singing of “Tiny Bubbles” by Dave Bradley. Act two was the comedy of Father Ernie (Ernie Eighmey) and his acolyte Johnny Dorf (Steve Thorsted). Act three was the topper dancers, Helen Carson, Ellen Thorsted and Bobby Eighmey. Act four was the singing of Kokomo by the whole assembly with swing dancing. Afterward, the floor was open to dancing by everyone to Kokomo again.

This may be the end of Chula Vista as a destination for the Roadrunners but there are more trips planned for this next year. Any resident who owns an RV is welcome to join the Roadrunners Club. Monthly dinner meetings are held on the second Tuesday at the lodge during winter months and at Roadrunner Park during summer months. Social hour begins at 5 p.m., dinner is served at 6 p.m. Annual membership is $5 per person.
