Mother/Son Duo to open Oingo Boingo Concert

Canyon Lake’s Aprile DeAnne McKinnon and her son, Shaun McKinnon, are gearing up to open for the sold-out Oingo Boingo Former Members Concert at the Canyon Lake Lodge’s Holiday Bay Room tomorrow.

Both Aprile and Shaun have made significant contributions to the local music scene through their performances and community involvement.

Aprile has an impressive history of opening for renowned bands and artists such as Canned Heat, Rick Derringer and Berlin. Her son, Shaun, a self-taught guitarist and songwriter, performs with his band Isolate, known for its energetic renditions of songs by Sublime, Weezer, and Green Day. Their joint performance opening for Canned Heat at a Concerts at the Lodge concert, demonstrated their harmonious collaboration and shared musical passion.

Mother and son, Aprile DeAnne McKinnon and Shaun McKinnon will take the stage tomorrow to open for Oingo Boingo Former Members at the Canyon Lake Lodge.

Doug Schultz, the Canyon Lake POA concert promoter for the Concerts at the Lodge series, commended the duo for their exceptional talent and the enthusiastic response he received from their previous performance. He highlighted the special connection of having a mother and son from Canyon Lake perform together.

“After the Canned Heat Concert at the Lodge, I received overwhelming props and concert goers requested I to bring back Aprile and Shaun for an encore performance,” Doug said. “Aprile is a very talented singer, and such a pleasure to work with, and her son is a rising star. Having them perform as mother and son Canyon Lakers is a real treat and the community will absolutely love them. Come early so you don’t miss their performance.”

More recently, Aprile and her band Code 415 played at the Holiday Bay Room on New Year’s Eve and the Grand Re-Opening at the Lodge on Friday. Shaun, with his band Isolate, played at the Ugly Sweater Poker Run on the Lodge stage where the band volunteered its time.

“One of my best memories of performing was when I opened for the Four Tops at the Rose Bowl,” Aprile said. “This will date me, but Wolfman Jack was the M.C. However, my favorite performance ever was performing with my son Shaun on stage together when we opened for Canned Heat. I can’t wait to do it again tomorrow.”

In addition to their musical talents, Aprile and Shaun actively contribute to Canyon Lake’s community. Aprile works as a Realtor and is a reporter for The Friday Flyer, while Shaun is employed by Hoffman’s Painting and pursues his love for surfing and music in his spare time.
