City volunteers blanket Canyon Lake, place 4,800 flags

The City of Canyon Lake staff and a team of 78 volunteers covered more than 17 miles of city streets to place a flag on each of the 4,800 front yards throughout the community. The effort was a repeat from a successful flag placement last year.

Efforts started on Wednesday and all flags were in place at every home by Friday night, just ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.

Traditionally, Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest weekends for the City of Canyon Lake as thousands of residents and guests enjoy holiday festivities and the lake.

“Canyon Lake is an active and vibrant community with many first responders, military service members and veterans who live in our city,” City of Canyon Lake Mayor Jeremy Smith said. “We wanted to find a positive way for us to spread patriotism throughout our community, while also honoring those who have lost their lives to ensure the freedoms and opportunities that make America the greatest country in the world.”

To organize the massive undertaking, the city created an online volunteer registration form to make it easy for residents to sign up. In total, 78 volunteers signed up to place flags in 52 pre-designated zones within the city. Each zone contained nearly 100 homes.

With the holiday weekend over, residents not wishing to keep the flag were encouraged by the city to retire their flag at one of two flag retirement boxes in the community for proper disposal. These boxes are located at Fire Station #1, 28730 Vacation Drive, or, at Pack Wrap and Post, located in the Canyon Lake Town Center at 31566 Railroad Canyon Road #2.

“As residents and visitors drove through the community and saw flags everywhere, they couldn’t help but remember the significance of this important holiday,” Jeremy said. “We are proud to live in one of the most patriotic cities in America.”
