City pioneer named Citizen of the Month

City pioneer Jack Wamsley was named the City of Canyon Lake Citizen of the Month last week at the April City Council Meeting.

Canyon Lake Mayor Jeremy Smith presented Jack with the award after praise was heaped upon the man who served on both Canyon Lake Property Association boards and City of Canyon Lake City Councils for decades.

Jack spearheaded the formation of the city 32 years ago. He mentioned in his remarks at the meeting that what motivated him and his group of civic leaders to petition for the city creation was a feud with the county over it not using Canyon Lake tax dollars on city roads and other infrastructure. He said it took about a year from start to city vote to bring the City of Canyon Lake to realization, something unheard of at the time. The city was created in 1990 and Jack served on the first City Council.

City of Canyon Lake Mayor Jeremy Smith presents the city’s April Citizen of the Month Award to city pioneer Jack Wamsley for a lifetime of service to the community. Jack helped for the city and was on the first city council 32 years ago.

The city council members thanked Jack for his lifetime of dedicated service to Canyon Lake.

“Jack is an amazing man in this community,” Jeremy said at the presentation. “He’s helped us through so many things and sat on every board possible for the City of Canyon Lake including our first city council. Jack was instrumental in helping us become a real city. You continue to give service to this community and you never say no. It was easy for this council to choose you as Citizen of the Month.”

Others on the current city council joined in on giving Jack a heartwarming tribute during which they thanked him for his years of dedication to the community.

Councilmember Kasey Castillo thanked Jack for his encouragement when she was running for office and said that she looked to Jack as someone she tries to emulate as a public servant.

“As one of our founding fathers, I appreciate how much you care and how much of your life and heart you put into the city,” Councilmember Jennifer Dain said.

After all of the accolades, Jack expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of praise and credited his success to the many strong and dedicated people in Canyon Lake who have supported him over the years.

Jack thought it was exceptionally important that when he served, he was on both the Canyon Lake City Council and on the Canyon Lake POA board at the same time. He said he felt it was a way to communicate what was going on at both meetings to help fluidity.

Jack took the opportunity at the meeting to encourage both the City Council and the POA to come together once a month to work unitedly on what is best for the people of Canyon Lake.
