Firefighters participate in Read Across America

In celebration of Read Across America Day, firefighters from the Canyon Lake Fire Department had the opportunity to read their favorite children‘s book, Sparky the Fire Dog, at the Canyon Lake Community Church’s Preschool last week.

There are 45 million people who participate in this educational holiday program. Captain Tim O’Marra read aloud while Paramedic/Firefighter Ryan Moore demonstrated how to put on the personal protective equipment (PPE).

The day concluded with the children receiving helmets, stickers and bracelets as they became “Junior Firefighters.”

“The power of reading and the knowledge that is gained is critical,” Engineer/Paramedic Nate Garcia said. “What a privilege to be influential in fostering a love for reading. Thank you for allowing us to participate in Read Across America with these children, the future of our community,”

The National Education Association created the diverse book challenge in honor of their theme, “A Nation of Diverse Readers.” The challenge includes volunteering to read to students, introducing them to new books and much more. The association said the importance of reading and education is greater than ever before.
