Vernon John Gingrich

Vernon leaves behind his wife, Beverly, his daughter, Patricia Altman (Tim), his son, Vernon Gingrich Jr. (Denise), his grandchildren Timothy Altman (Allie) and Julie Altman, as well as Beverly’s two daughters. Vernon also leaves behind siblings Dennis Gingrich (Alice), Roy Gingrich, Beverly Haney (Steve), Carol Jenner (Mitch) and Brian Gingrich (Darilyne), as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Vernon led a full life. To say that he enjoyed cars, water skiing and competition would be an understatement. In junior high school he discovered his talent for pole vaulting and set records in high school and carried that passion into his adult years as a Senior Olympian.

From an early age, his family would go to Salton Sea where they built a family home to spend time with family and friends, drive their dune buggies and boats, water ski and enjoy time together. He would go on to raise his family in Canyon Lake, CA and compete in water ski tournaments throughout his life there. He loved being part of the Canyon Lake Ski Club and the community he shared with all the great people there.

At 57, he retired from Dutton Motor Company in Riverside, CA, after which he and Beverly continued their retirement in Hot Springs, AK. He loved being surrounded by all the lakes and trees there. He loved being outdoors, and was the happiest when he was on or near the water.

He took pride in taking care of his properties, spending hours mowing the acres of grass or clearing the brush, maintaining the storage units he built, and making good friends along the way. As the saying goes, “he never met a stranger.”

For years, he participated in the Senior Olympics where he competed in pole vaulting, 50 meter run, discus and high jump. In addition, he volunteered with the local high school track team to mentor and share his love of pole vaulting and competition with the young athletes. He also found time to play on the senior softball team, and enjoyed the friendly athletic rivalries there.

Vernon was an active member in his church, First Baptist Church. He enjoyed people, seeing old friends and making new friends wherever he went. He will be truly missed.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
