Hot Rods spice up Blasters

The Blasters, a band originally formed in 1979, played to a sold-out Canyon Lake Lodge audience Saturday night and wrapped up the year’s Concerts at the Lodge Series.

The group performed as a five piece band with original founding member and lead singer Phil Alvin on guitar and vocals, John Bazz on bass, Keith Wyatt on lead guitar and Matt McCroskey on drums.

The audience was on its feet as they welcomed Phil to the stage as the band played its big hit, “American Music.” The band performed for 75 minutes with non-stop songs including hits such as “Marie Marie,” “So Long Baby Goodbye” and “Border Radio.”

“The audience knew most of the Blasters’ songs and sang along with the band,” Canyon Lake POA Concert Producer Doug Schultz said. “Phil told me he was ready to go on when we spoke backstage so as I introduced the Canyon Lake audience to the Blasters, the music played and the audience took to their feet.”

Andrew Cole was the opening act. He started the night off with a 35-minute set, including his hit song, “Colorblind.”

Before the show began and the doors opened, 15 classic hot rods parked on the grass of the Lodge and set up an impromptu car show in support of the Blasters who have performed at numerous car show related events over the years.

Dave Anderson, a Canyon Laker, saw his first Blasters show back in the 1980s and brought his two cars out to show his support for the band he’s been following throughout the years.

Dave said he and his buddies bought some 50 tickets for friends and family to come out to Canyon Lake to enjoy the band.

The Blasters are an American rock band formed in 1979 in Downey by brothers Phil Alvin and Dave Alvin, with bass guitarist John Bazz and drummer Bill Bateman. Their self-described “American Music” is a blend of rockabilly, early rock and roll, punk rock, mountain music, and rhythm and blues and country.
