Finances taught to kids at the library

The Canyon Lake Library wrapped up a free two-week financial class for kids today teaching the ABC’s and the 123’s about money. The classes were held Monday, Wednesday and Friday of both weeks.

Cassidy Eden, Bernadette Mycroft and Nathan Streater got together to bring a little money education to the kids.

During Week One, the attendees were taught the three W’s of Money: what it is, why we need it and why we save it. Week Two included teaching the kids how to start a business and what taxes are all about. About 25 kids attended each week. Cassidy said it was their goal to start teaching kids about money so they could have a better understanding of ways to earn, save and invest it.

“We also talked about different ways to make money,” Cassidy said. “We taught them about obtaining jobs, starting a business and investing.”

Cassidy said she decided to volunteer to run the two-week program, because she sees how good it’s been for her two daughters.

“They don’t teach key lessons about money in school anymore. They simply teach kids to get good grades, go to college and get a job,” Cassidy said. “That’s old-school thinking. To really make a difference, you must learn to master money, or you will become a slave to money.”

Matthew Rubio, 10, said he enjoyed the class because it taught him how to get set up for life.

“I don’t want to be clueless or financially stuck when I grow up,” he said.

Sam Triolo-13, Matthew Rubio-10, Jacqueline Rubio-12, Catherine Rubio-12.

Catherine Rubio, 12, said she enjoyed learning how to handle money and she hopes to carry this through her life to avoid making money mistakes. Her twin sister Jacqueline said she liked learning about how to start a business because she hopes to have one of her own someday.

Thirteen-year-old Sam Triolo said she appreciated the knowledge she gained from the classes and hopes to apply it throughout her life.

Ben Rojas, 7, said he enjoyed talking about his dreams of what he wanted to be when he grew up. He said he wants to join the military, but for now, he enjoys helping his mom with her dog-sitting business.
