Incumbents running for city reelection

All three of the incumbents whose terms expire this year are running for reelection to the Canyon Lake City Council, according to City Clerk Ana Sauseda. The deadline for submitting nomination papers is Friday (Aug. 12). So far, only those three individuals have pulled papers, Ana said.

There will be three City of Canyon Lake City Council seats up for grabs in the upcoming Nov. 8 election. The three seats available at the election include two that will be four-year terms and one that will be a two-year term.

The three city councilmembers who will have current terms expiring and will face re-election are Jeremy Smith, Kasey Castillo and Jennifer Dain.

After the election in November, the new city council will vote among themselves to name the mayor and mayor pro-tem. All candidates will run simply for the open council seats (voters do not vote for mayor). Jeremy is the current mayor. Kasey and Jennifer currently serve as councilmembers on the City Council, with Kasey having served as mayor the year prior to Jeremy’s current stint as mayor.

“All three incumbents have announced that they will be seeking re-election,” Ana said. “Mayor Smith and Councilmember Castillo have filed the required paperwork and have officially qualified as candidates. Councilmember Dain has pulled papers and has an appointment Thursday (yesterday) to file her paperwork.”

The odd two-year term is the result of Jennifer being appointed to the City Council last year to fill the seat of Jordan Ehrenkranz, who passed away while in office. She must face election this year, and her seat will be up for election again in 2024 to keep it in its regular four-year cycle. Any registered voter of the City of Canyon Lake may run for office by pulling and submitting nomination papers by Friday (Aug. 12) at noon. Those interested in running for the city council are asked to schedule an appointment with Ana by emailing or calling her at asauseda@canyonlakeca.gov or 951-244-8547.
