In Memoriam: Lavern Simon Overturf

Lavern Simon Overturf went to be with the Lord on March 23, 2022. He passed away in his home with his family by his side after losing his courageous battle with esophageal cancer.

Lavern Simon Overturf

Most often called Si by his many friends, he was also a husband for 56 years to his wife, Lynne, father to Debbie and Kimmy, father-in-law to Jon and Steve, adopted father to Dionne, Tom, and Keren, and grandfather to the joys of his life, Alexa, Michelle, Raille, Maddie, Courtney, and Trent. He was also the beloved brother-in-law to Karen Bidgood, Dorinda Baddley, and Loretta Overturf.

He was born in the small town of Gerry, New York to Emma and Roy Overturf and had a brother, Larry, and two sisters, Darlene and Mary. Hard work and integrity were emphasized in his family and that followed him through all his life.

When Si was 18, he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Hawaii where he met his wife who was 16 at the time. Si and Lynne married young and set off on an adventure together that would last 60 years during which they always felt blessed and grateful.

After the service, he used the communication skills he learned there to obtain work at GTE where he worked for 30 years, retiring as a supervisor. A move to Canyon Lake came next, where he got a part-time job driving for Kinko’s while he waited for Lynne to retire in 2010 from her job as a Clinical Psychologist.

Si continued enjoying the things he loved like being with his family, driving his truck anywhere, annual trips to Pismo Beach, and the heartbreaking, never-ending rooting for the Cleveland Browns. Si was fun and funny, cared about people, was someone you could really count on, and loved God. He will be sorely missed.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on April 23, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Canyon Lake Community Church.
