In Memoriam: Bernadette Velk

Bernadette Velk
April 21, 1937 – March 3, 2022

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our loving mother Bernadette (Bernie) Velk. Our mother passed away on March 3, 2022 at age 84. She was a resident of Canyon Lake for the past 41 years.

Bernadette Velk

Bernie was born in Youngstown, Ohio where she graduated from Ursuline All Girls Catholic High School. There, she met the love of her life, Edward Velk, and spent the next 61 wonderful years together until his passing in 2017.

In 1961, she and Ed moved to Garden Grove, CA where they raised their family together. As the kids grew older, Bernie took a job at the Tustin News as a typesetter, and then Rockwell International, where she worked on projects for the Trident Submarine, the Minute Man Missile, and the B-2 Bomber.

Bernie enjoyed all her friends she made along the way. 1n 1979, her husband Ed and her family began building their dream home in Canyon Lake. They officially moved into their home in 1981 and have been there ever since. Bernie enjoyed the parties, family get-togethers and barbecues held at her house.

For those who knew Bernie, they knew she was a “tell it like it is” person who loved to laugh, loved to help others, and loved her family very much. She was always there whenever someone was in need of a kind word, support, or financial help. She was the backbone of our family.

Bernie enjoyed dancing, attending her grandkids’ activities, conversations on the deck as the boats passed by, and watching her family grow. After her husband’s passing, she enjoyed playing cards at the Senior Center and appreciated all the support that her new friends gave her.

Bernie is survived by her brother Bill Hripko and his wife June of Kelso, Washington, her sister Jeannie Pavlacic and her husband Manny of Garden Grove, her four children Shawn, Lisa, Dale, and Eric, and their spouses Rick, Lori, and Angie. She is survived by her nine grandchildren Christine, Kenny, Natalie, Morgan, Ricky, Heidi, Trevor, Mackenzie, and Brayden, and three great grandchildren Ben, Luke, and Sage, with three more on the way!

Viewing is planned for Tuesday April 5 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Miller-Jones Funeral Home, 26770 Murrieta Rd., Sun City.

Funeral services will take place the following day, Wednesday, April 6, at 11:00 a.m. at Miller-Jones Funeral Home with the internment to take place at approximately 1:30 p.m. at the Riverside National Cemetery.
